Wrapping up 2013

It’s coming around again…Christmas and the New Year…
2013 saw the start of a blog added to our website and we have been able to use this to post, what we hope, was some useful content for our readers.
During the year we noticed there was a particular grain that gained some serious attention as the year rolled by and that was Sorghum. The grain that was once and still today, very much produced for stock feed, has significantly moved up the pecking order of valuable food grade products. This was greatly assisted, we believe, due to the fact the grain is naturally gluten free and has good nutritional’s. Be it wholegrain, kibble or flour, the recipes were flowing and tips on how to cook with Sorghum were high in numbers. According to Agrimoney.com, “the bureau forecast a 9% fall to 1.2m hectares in sowings of summer sorghum crops, but with output likely to fall faster, given the pressure on yields from the low soil moisture levels”. Hopefully they do not fall much further, as I am sure 2014 will continue to show increased demand for this increasingly popular grain.
Australian crops unfortunately took a beating in many parts of the country this year after initial expectations were for a bumper yield. Nature turned and with some heavy late frosts and minimum rainfall, particularly in the eastern side of the continent, the damaged was significant for some. Of course it wasn’t all bad news, with W.A. increasing its expected tonnage’s and of course we can look ahead to a favourable cropping season in 2014!
One of the big stories from the year saw the retention of Australian’s GrainCorp after Archer Daniels Midland foreign investment take over bid was rejected by the Treasurer. Some were happy and some were not in regards to this decision. ADM themselves were disappointed but have still promised to continue investing in Australian agribusiness in the future.
So in the spirit of wrapping things up, to our customers, service providers and suppliers, Mirfak Pty Ltd would like to wish all a Merry Christmas and safe and happy New Year. We appreciate your business with us very much and are looking forward to working with you again throughout 2014.
